One of Fairmont’s hidden secrets, the Mountain Dragon Mazery on the East Side, has wowed customers with its classic, yet unique, take on meads for the past several years.
Couple Ruthann Smith and Tom Maltby opened the mazery, or meadery, in 2014, and have slowly been gaining suppliers in the state.
“We picked up with Tamarack very early on,” Smith said. “In the past year, we’ve expanded to several (places) in the North Central region … . We just picked up another store in Wheeling, too.”
Essentially, mead is very similar to wine, but it’s made with honey instead of grapes. The company’s West Virginia Wildflower Honey Mead is made only from honey, gluten-free yeast and water.
The pair only make their mead with fresh, local honey and now offer eight different kinds of the alcoholic beverage.
