ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) The Blacksnake Meadery held the grand opening of their tasting room Thursday afternoon.
The Hive Tasting room is on 1116 Main Street in the Wasena neighborhood.
The husband-wife couple who owns the business has been making mead for 11 years in Carroll County but wanted to bring their product to their neighbors in Roanoke.
Mead is an alcoholic beverage created by fermenting honey.
“That doesn’t mean it has to be sweet, it doesn’t mean you have to wear viking horns to drink it,” said co-owner Steve Villers.
“So it is really varied, we have dry ones, sweet ones, flavored ones, it is one of the fastest growing segments of the alcoholic industry so there is a lot more diversity coming.”
The owners are beekeepers and use either their own honey or local honey in their meads.
According to Lisa B. Soltis, with the Ronaoke Dept. of Economic Development, the owners envision a space for tourists and locals alike to sample the flavors of regional beverages.
The Hive is open Thursday through Sunday, weekdays 4:30 to 8 PM and weekends 1-8 PM.
