About one year after opening, am Allentown-based maker of the alcoholic beverage derived from fermented honey plans a major expansion.

The Colony Meadery on Wednesday announced it plans to triple its footprint in a project that will allow the meadery to double its production and cater to more people looking to taste mead.

“We thought our initial projections were achievable but aggressive,” Greg Heller-LaBelle, Colony Meadery CEO and co-founder, said in a statement. “We exceeded them by more than 100 percent in year one, and we’re going to need dramatically more capacity to keep filling demand.”

The facility opened in late December 2013 at the Bridgeworks Enterprise Center, 905 Harrison St. The center is an Allentown Economic Development Corp. venture operating out of a former Mack Trucks plant. It’s served as a business incubator. In addition to the Colony Meadery, it’s also home to HiJinx Brewing Company.
