[Maine] Fat Friar’s Meadery Owner to lead off Merryspring winter talk series

Camden, Maine — Mead producer Sean Bailey will lead a presentation titled “Mead – What It Is, Was, and May Become” Tuesday, Jan. 24, at noon at Merryspring Nature Center.

The first of the 2017 Winter Talk series, Bailey will speak about how mead, honey wine, is made and will offer tips for those interested in creating their own mead. He will discuss a brief history of where it came from, how he got his start, the unique opportunities of making an agricultural product in the state of Maine, the farm winery licensing process, and the difficulties and surprising results of his seven-year journey to today.

A native Mainer, Bailey founded The Fat Friar’s Meadery in Newcastle after a trip to Germany with his wife in 2009. Already an experienced wine-maker, Bailey was so impressed with German meads he began producing his own, becoming an official farm winery in 2010.

This program is first of the Winter Talk series at Merryspring, sponsored by Allen Insurance & Financial. Tuesday talks are open to the public for $5, with free admittance for members of Merryspring.
