The alcohol content of downtown Loveland continues to rise, with the planned addition of a meadery next year.

Loveland resident Guy McConnell has leased a building at 451 N. Railroad Ave. for his Laughing Leprechaun Meadery, which he hopes to open by March 2016.

McConnell is planning to introduce the drinking public to mead, which is basically wine made from honey.

“It’s considered the oldest fermented beverage,” McConnell said, “predating beer, predating wine.”

McConnell said he has been making beer at home since 1990 and started brewing mead two years later.

He said his wife, Dana, had been saying for years that he should start a craft brewery, but he was reluctant to give up a comfortable salary in the high-tech industry to take the leap.
